H.E. Mr. Chheang Vun, Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Information and Media of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Cambodian parliamentary delegation, who was attending the First Executive Council Meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly this morning of 26 September 2016 said the reason that the Asian Parliamentary Assembly has chosen Cambodia as the venue for its meetings is not accidental. He added that Cambodia has remarkably achieved its economic growth, and the country has become a place of full peace and robust development after it had gone through decades of wars. Due to these critical factors, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly has confidence in, and decided to select Cambodia to host the said regional event.

It is noted that the above mentioned meetings, which are held from 26-27 September 2016 at Sofitel Phnom Penh Pokeethra Hotel, bring together delegates from member parliaments of 21 Asian countries to share views and experiences in tackling regional problems. H.E. Mr. Chheang Vun, Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Information and Media of the National Assembly, stressed that the two meetings are very critical towards the 9th Plenary Session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, which is scheduled to take place in the late 2016 in Cambodia’s historical province of Siem Reap.

The Chairman went on to say that the two-day meetings discussed common regional issues, such as political, economic, social and cultural ones.

The meetings mobilize views from Asian parliamentarians in order to beef up cooperation in the settlement of our common issues. We are aware that people in Asia face desperate poverty; therefore, this gathering will make a substantial contribution to the governments and member parliaments in Asia in solving the problems for people, said H.E. Mr. Chheang Vun.

The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) was born in 2016 and transformed from the Association of Asian Parliament for Peace (AAPP), which was established in 1999. The Asian Parliamentary Assembly comprises of 42 member parliaments with Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei HENG SAMRIN, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, assuming the chairmanship since 2015 when the Parliament of the Kingdom of Cambodia once fruitfully hosted the APA 8th Plenary Session.
